“to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD” (Deuteronomy 8:3).
A CONSTANT SOURCE OF FOOD (Pt 1)
Imagine a larder that’s always full—that’s God’s Word, we can go to it any time and receive good quality food that human beings need to live.
“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire” (Isa 55:10–11). Are you an “eater”? If so then this verse is for you. God’s Word is symbolised by natural food. We need natural food to live biologically and we need God’s Word to live spiritually, for we are more than simply a body.
God is Spirit and wants us to grow as his children in a spiritual way. To get “strong in spirit” just as John the Baptist did (Luke 1:80).
God’s Word helps us to grow in strength, and there’s always the correct food for each one of us.
Our natural bodies need a variety of vitamins and minerals, and certain foods will give us those nutrients, so too with God’s Word we will receive exactly what we need. And there’s never a shortage of supply.
And let’s be sure that the Lord is always ready to feed us: “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way” (Matt 15:32).
Yes, some people do not eat for a day or so, we do not go to God’s Word, and yet everyday the Lord desires to feed us as our heavenly Father. Ingrained within parents is the desire to feed their children.
Jesus showed the people that if they are hungry he can feed them and he multiplied the fish and bread as an important lesson. There is never a shortage of supply from God perspective, but the trouble is some children neglect the food they are given. God is willing to give but are we willing to receive?
When we do receive we grow and get healthy before God, and we look forward to our daily bread. “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matt 6:11), is a prayer not only for natural food but for spiritual food too. After all, the manna was given in the wilderness to the children of Israel to teach them that we do not live on bread alone.
Today and everyday let’s make sure that we receive the heavenly food that is on offer.
“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live” (Isa 55:1–3).
